A charming historic home with much to see. The tour was a little short though.

While John Carter fought in the Revolution as the commander of Fort Watauga, I do not know if he fought at Kings Mountain. Carter County is named for his son, Landon, and Elizabethton is named for his wife, Elizabeth. He died in 1781 from smallpox.

My family (Thomas') bought the Carter Mansion(1770's) from the Carter Heirs(about1880's).sold to the State of TN 1974.. It is located at 1031 Broad St not 1013. Abe Lincoln's uncle lived up river from this house @3mi. Andrew Johnson's daughter lived up river as well @1mi and Herbert Hoover gave a speach near by where the Chamber of Commerce now stands. These 3 presidents had water from the well @the Carter Mansion. It is also acclaimed as the 1st house west of the Allegany Mts to have window panes. Built a long the lines of the Shirley Plantation in VA (believed relatives)

The house is open from Memorial Day to Labor day at 2 PM for a one hour tour. For the rest of the year, the house is open each Tuesday from 12 PM to 3 PM. However, before making travel plans, be sure to contact the Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park for information. I did not see information specific to the Carter Mansion operating hours, so you may have to call the park.

I am a travel writer for National Park Planner and I visited the Carter Mansion in May 2014. The Carter Mansion is an official stop on the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail, part of the National Park System.

The Carter Mansion is run by the Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park and is located at 1013 Broad Street, Elizabethton, TN 37643. Built around 1780 by John Carter and his son Landon, the house is the oldest frame house in Tennessee (North Carolina at the time). Carter was a member of the Watauga Association, a government formed in 1772 to govern the settlers of the Watauga and Nolichunky (near present day Nashville) settlements. At the time this was Indian land given to the Cherokee by the British in 1763. By forming the Watauga Association, Carter and his fellow settlers, in effect, became the very first colonists in America to form an independent government, superseding those who went on to form the United States of America.

For information on all of the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail sites, visit National Park Planner (npplan).

The lunch review was not at this Carter Mansion rather, it was at Landon's heir located at 829 E Elk Ave. (practically around the corner)
